Volunteer Spotlight: Susan O'Malley

Susan, a United Way volunteer and champion

For more than 20 years, Susan has made United Way's Day of Action a tradition. This day has become one filled with teamwork, new connections, and a contagious spirit of giving back. As an HR Director at Bank of Springfield (BOS), Susan spends much of her day at a desk, but Day of Action gives her the chance to roll up her sleeves and make a hands-on difference in our community.

"I've always found volunteering with Day of Action to be something that allows me to get out and meet new folks, discover new agencies and help my community directly," Susan shared. "It's also a great way to catch up with co-workers you might not get to see...It's refreshing and a contagious energy!"

In addition to volunteering twice a year with Day of Action, Susan has served on United Way's Community Fund Panel and gives annually through BOS's workplace campaign. BOS also partners with United Ways across its market areas to build partnerships and connections with other communities as well.Susan O'Malley

"Volunteering with...United Way is the perfect way for our employees to help fulfill this mission and give back to those around them."

When asked about her favorite Day of Action project, Susan lit up talking about her experience at Refuge Ranch in Rochester:

"I knew absolutely nothing about the organization beforehand and had no idea what we were getting into! Its mission is one that touched my heart, the staff is so friendly and welcoming, and who doesn't love volunteering alongside baby goats?! I hope to be able to volunteer out there again soon."

Her advice for anyone looking to get started? Just jump in! She encourages companies to coordinate teams and get more involved with United Way across the board. United Way makes it easy to get involved whether it's with a team project like Day of Action or a solo volunteer opportunity that you can coordinate on your own by visiting their website and clicking on Volunteer. There's a project that fits everyone on this site.
