Ways to Give

Your gift to United Way is working for the betterment of our community.

100% of donations to United Way’s Community Fund go directly to program services. Fundraising and administrative costs associated with the Community Fund are underwritten by the United Way Endowment, and select corporate gifts.

You are most likely familiar with giving via payroll deduction, credit card, or check mailed to or dropped by our office at 1999 Wabash Avenue, Suite 107, Springfield, IL 62704.(If not, please learn more about these ways of giving here.) Did you know that there are many other options to make a long standing gift? Here are just a few. Please reach out to our Director of Donor Engagement for more information.

Gifts from your IRA

Individuals aged 70 and a half and older are required to take yearly distributions from their IRA, which are then subjected to taxation. Did you know that? There is a way to reduce your tax burden while also contributing to your community.

By making rollover contributions from your IRA, you have the opportunity to donate up to $100,000 annually to charitable organizations like the United Way of Central Illinois, and the best part is, it's entirely tax-free. Just inform your broker or fund manager of your intention to donate all or a portion of your Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to United Way of Central Illinois. To ensure your year-end giving goes smoothly, we recommend initiating this process no later than December 23.

Gifts of Stock

By transferring appreciated stocks, you can effectively bypass paying capital gains tax and also deduct the entire value of your gift from your tax return. To start a stock transfer, just have your portfolio manager get in touch with our Director of Donor Engagement, who will provide necessary instructions.

Please keep in mind that gifts typically take a few business days to process, so we recommend initiating this process no later than December 23 for year-end-giving.

Include United Way in your Will

Where there's a will, there's a way. Having a will is essential for everyone, regardless of the size of your estate, as it serves as a valuable tool to support your chosen beneficiaries and causes close to your heart. By having a will, you can ensure that your desires are clearly stated and known. To make the process easier, United Way has collaborated with FreeWill, allowing you to create a free will in as little as 20 minutes. For more information or to begin the process, visit their website at: www.freewill.com

Endowment Gifts

Endowment gifts create a steady stream of annual income to forever support the United Way's critical work in our community. Endowment gifts can be made at any time, or can be created as a part of an estate plan.

Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a type of giving program administered by a third party that allows you to easily make a charitable contribution to the United Way of Central Illinois while also receiving favorable tax benefits.

It is created for the purpose of managing charitable donations on behalf of an organization, family, or individual. DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals.
