Dust Yourself Off: Lessons From a Life Well-Lived

''

As I celebrate another birthday, I find myself feeling grateful, reflective, and grounded in all the moments that have shaped me into who I am today.

I grew up in Paris, Illinois, a small town tucked away in Central Illinois, just about 19 minutes from the Indiana border. Growing up in a small town wasn’t always easy, but it shaped me in powerful ways. It taught me resilience, independence, and how to work hard for what I want. Most importantly, it helped me understand the importance of spreading my wings and stepping outside of what’s familiar in order to grow.

Long before my journey with United Way of Central Illinois, I was learning the value of service through my dad’s example. He always encouraged giving back. Whether it was volunteering as a candy striper at the hospital, playing music at church, babysitting, being involved in yearbook, poms, or various committees, those early experiences taught me compassion, responsibility, and the joy of helping others. Those moments truly laid the foundation for the work I do today and the heart I have for supporting my community.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends. Whether it’s going out to eat, sharing a glass of wine, listening to music, or driving around town, those simple moments are some of my favorites. I also love being at home, sitting outside enjoying my flowers, and spending time with my fur baby, Reilly, who brings me so much joy.

One of my favorite places I’ve traveled is Clearwater Beach in Florida. We stay in a simple efficiency motel close to the ocean, and that familiarity makes it feel like home. I’m not someone who travels constantly, but when I do, I’m always happy once I’m there. Clearwater has become my happy place—simple, nostalgic, and peaceful, with everything within walking distance and the ocean always nearby.

Living in Central Illinois is something I truly appreciate. I love the change of seasons, especially fall. There’s something about the crisp air, changing leaves, and cozy feeling of autumn that makes it my favorite time of year. I also deeply value the people here—there is a genuine kindness and sense of community in the Midwest that makes it feel like home.

This year hasn’t been without its challenges. January started off rocky, but I am incredibly grateful for my CEO, my team, and the support system around me that has helped me continue to grow as a leader. I am proud to be part of United Way of Central Illinois and thankful for the opportunity to continue developing both personally and professionally.

One of the most important lessons I’ve carried with me came from my dad: if you fall on your face, get back up, dust yourself off, and keep going. Life will always have ups and downs, but resilience and perseverance are what carry you through. That lesson has stayed with me and continues to guide me every day.

As I reflect on this birthday, I am most grateful for my life, my health, my family, and my friends. I am also deeply grateful for my guy and significant other, whose love and support mean so much to me and are such an important part of my life.

I am thankful for a career that I truly enjoy, and for the opportunity to do meaningful work that allows me to support and strengthen the community I care so much about.

As I look ahead to another year, my heart is full of gratitude—for the people I love, the work I do, the lessons I’ve learned, and the journey still ahead. For all of it, I am truly thankful.
