Bonding Hearts for NICU Families: Comfort in the Smallest Ways
When you're a parent with a baby in the NICU, every moment apart can feel like a world away. But thanks to the thoughtful work of our local Student United Way chapters, families at St. John’s Hospital NICU are receiving a little extra comfort in the smallest ways, stitched with love and care.
A Small Gesture with a Big Impact
Students from District 186 and Glenwood High School Student United Way clubs have been handmaking Bonding Hearts. These soft, flannel hearts offer connection during some of life’s most fragile moments. These hearts are designed to be worn next to a parent’s skin, absorbing their scent. Once placed beside the infant in the NICU, the familiar smell provides a soothing presence, helping strengthen the bond between parent and baby even when they can’t physically be together.
The project was inspired by a need shared by a NICU nurse from St. John’s, and the students stepped up in a big way. Their compassion and action remind us that empathy knows no age—and that our youth are already leading with heart.
United in Purpose
This initiative reflects the very essence of United Way’s mission: bringing people together to support one another, no matter the challenge. It's also a shining example of how students can be powerful changemakers in their communities—responding to real needs with meaningful solutions.
As these Bonding Hearts make their way to the NICU, we’re filled with pride and gratitude. To the students who took the time to cut, sew, and give—thank you. You’ve given more than just a piece of fabric. You’ve given comfort, connection, and hope.
